Introducing David Lees

Hi I’m David!

I’m a few weeks into my time at Starks Fitness so I thought I’d take the opportunity to introduce myself and let everyone know exactly what it is I do. I joined the Starks team primarily as a Soft Tissue Therapist and am working in conjunction with some of the industry leading coaches already working here to provide what is the best customer focused training facility I’ve been a part of.

I initially became involved in the industry after numerous knee operations due to playing rugby, which unfortunately I am now retired from. During the recovery and rehab process I became fascinated in the way the body moves and how incredible humans are at adapting to stress and training. To cut a long story short, I went on to gain a number of qualifications from Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapy to Crossfit and Kettlebell certifications.

This wide ranging background in therapy and training carries over into my approach when dealing with a new client or working with one of my fellow coaches to problem solve a particular issue for a client. I will often start with a general movement screen that literally takes minutes to show any big imbalances or issues and hone in on specific areas based on the information we gather during the screen.

Treatment can then take the form of any number of different soft tissue modalities to increase the range of motion around a joint, down regulate hyper tonic (tense) muscles and even increase the ability of a weak muscle to fire correctly. Many of my sessions will end with some specific, easily applicable drills specific to the client’s needs for them to perform at home in between sessions with me and their PT.

In addition to these ‘problem solving’ sessions, I also work a lot with clients on an ongoing basis to help them recover from their training and life in general. These maintenance sessions tend to include a more general full body treatment to stave off nagging injuries and to help you get the most from your training sessions. Ongoing treatment on a monthly, fortnightly or even a weekly basis if you are undertaking a particularly gruelling phase of training can be invaluable!
